Groundless Rumors!

By David J. Smith
July 11, 2009

Webster’s New International Dictionary, Second Edition, Unabridged, defines gossip as: “One who runs from house to house or goes about tattling and telling news; an idle tattler; a newsmonger. The tattle or conversation of a gossip; idle talk; groundless rumor; gossip is idle personal talk; petty gossip or scandal.”

Now look at the word slander: “Defamation [of character], whether oral or written; a false tale or report maliciously orally uttered and intended to injure the reputation of another; an evil report; ill repute; to be a cause of sin, to scandalize. To utter slander against; to defame; to injure by malicious false report; to accuse unjustly; to misrepresent a thing; to distort.”

Notice that the Unabridged Dictionary said gossip is slander, and slander is a false tale, an evil report to unjustly injure someone. It went so far as to say it could be spoken or written!!!

Could anyone who claims to be a Christian do such a thing? Would they slander or gossip about a fellow church member – OR – worse, a minister?

As a minister of Jesus Christ, I don’t listen to gossip or slander nor do I read notes or letters sent to me that slander others, or falsely accuse me!!! I refuse to read a note or letter that is unsigned that will falsely accuse anyone. That note or letter goes straight in the trashcan unread! God’s word and the courts state that a person has a right to face their accusers. Do we believe God’s Word?

Leviticus 19: 16: “You shall NOT go up and down as a talebearer among my people: …” How much clearer can the Word of God get? It says don’t run around and promote talebearing or lies when you don’t have all the facts to base a conclusion upon!!!

When you accuse someone without any facts, just groundless rumors, you SIN against the person you pointed your false accusations toward. I liken the talebearer who will not reveal him or herself as a coward. They love to do the Devil’s work of accusing the brethren, then HIDE behind a cloak of darkness – not letting the accused know who is accusing him or her!!! This is totally unbiblical! Notice Revelation 12: 10 [middle to last]: “… for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Does anyone want to do the Devil’s work? Keep ACCUSING one of God’s people or Christ’s ministers, and Satan, the Devil will applaud you right into the Lake of Fire. Sorry, but the Bible says NO LIAR will enter into the Kingdom of God.

Anyone engaged in gossip and slander against your brethren had better stop it! You are jeopardizing everything you are seeking – the Kingdom of God.

How spiritual are you? Do you compare yourself with others who also sin, or do you compare yourself with the sinless One, Jesus Christ? Proverbs 11: 13: “A talebearer reveals secrets (can’t keep their mouth shut): but he that is of a FAITHFUL spirit CONCEALS the matter.” If someone is faithful, they will not spread gossip or slander about someone else because those rumors may not be true!!! When someone spreads rumors, gossip, and slander, they are not showing self-control, which is the last character trait mentioned in the “fruit of the Spirit” (Gal. 5: 22-23).

What affect does talebearing have upon the falsely accused? The Bible is the Handbook from the Manufacturer of the human race. He tells us the affects. Proverbs 18: 8: “The words of a talebearer are as WOUNDS, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” Have you ever had lies told about you, and you knew it was a lie, but the other person who just heard the tale didn’t know? The other person assumes the worst about you, when it was not true, but just a rumor someone made up without any facts to back it up!

Pain can be more than cuts and bruises in an automobile accident. Pain can be more than being beaten by a terrible husband with a temper. Pain can be mental because of FALSE words said or written about you!!!

Look what happens when talebearers stop spreading their lies! Proverbs 26: 20: “Where no wood is, the fire goes out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife CEASES.” Quit accusing and lying about others and everyone becomes happy!

Note Jesus’ words and apply them. Matthew 18: 9: “And if your eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you: it is BETTER for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into HELL [valley of hinnom] fire.”

Jesus used this as an example. If you have a problem with your tongue, you need to REPAIR it or land in Gehennah fire to be burned up! Will you stop the gossip, slander, groundless rumors and live, or continue in them and die??? The decision is yours! Jesus died for your sins. Quit sinning!!!
