How Can God Love Us?

By David J. Smith
September 26, 2009

We, as human beings, have great difficulty in showing love to someone else. We definitely reinforce this statement by our actions. It seems that most of the time we just do not think before we act, therefore, our wife or husband or children are left out of an important decision. These types of actions send a message to our mates, friends, or children that we only care about our own gratification.

Where is the love in every action we take? Now, none of us are perfect, but there comes a time when we must let Christ live His life over inside of us by His Spirit. His Spirit can work with our natural mind to change it to a more spiritual mind.

Love is showing affection to another by actions, words, deeds, or a simple compliment! We all have different personalities. Some personalities need to hear that they are appreciated more than others. Other personalities are happy with themselves and do not need much praise.

Can you imagine God loving human beings who have problems with breaking His Everlasting Covenant? How could God love someone who worships other gods, whether it is called a god or whether it is materialism? Could we love someone who waved his or her hand in our face and confessed by his or her actions that they did not care for us?

How can God love people who lie to deceive others into waging war and murdering innocent victims? Love does not want to harm other individuals. Love only wants what is good for others. We witness drug related murders over money for drugs. How could God love such people, that without feeling, inflict injury and then death upon others?

When God and his angels look down and see men abusing wives with sharp words or shouting or with a fist in the face or stomach, how could God love such people? When God sees women manipulate husbands to get their way even if it will bring harmful results to a marriage, how can God love these people?

I have known of husbands who have betrayed their wives by committing adultery with another woman, AND I have known of women that committed adultery against their husbands. In either case the marriage was destroyed; and if there were children, they were devastated by the actions of others – called mothers and fathers! How could God love individuals who have flagrantly violated one of His commandments designed to protect the sanctity of the home? Homes demolished by the actions of one or the other partner in marriage. Lives devastated because of the economic ruin that it brings, many times.

One thing for sure is that these actions scream out that the violator does not love God; and if they cannot love a human being they can visually see, how can they love God whom they have never seen? But the GREAT question is: How can God love such great sinners?

Notice I John 4: 16 for the answer to all these questions: “… God IS [=] LOVE; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him.” Jesus also said: “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” John was also inspired to write: “If a man [or woman] say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment have we from Him, That he who loves God love his brother also” (I John 4: 20-21).

The answer is simple as to how can God love us as sinners! GOD IS LOVE!!! God’s very character is LOVE. He is very willing to forgive us because of this great character trait – LOVE!

Why do we think God will resurrect ALL who have ever lived and pour out His Spirit upon them? Because He is LOVE and does not want any to perish, but have everlasting life. “And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up out of your graves, And shall PUT MY SPIRIT in you, and you shall live, … then shall you know that I the Lord have SPOKEN it, and PERFORMED it, says the Lord” (Ezekiel 37: 1-14, especially v. 13-14).

Remember, God IS love! “For God so loved the world [even sinners – meaning all of us], that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should NOT perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3: 16-17).

This great love that God the Father and God the Son has is more than the natural mind can comprehend. But God has made these known to us BY HIS SPIRIT. “For what man knows the things of a man, save [except] the spirit of man which is in him? EVEN SO the things of God knows no man, but [except] the Spirit of God.” “God has revealed them unto us by His Spirit” (I Cor. 2: 11, 10).
