Are There Really Demons?

By David J. Smith
October 29, 2011

When I was just a young boy, I was taught that there were demons in Jesus’ day but not anymore. Truly, Revelation 12:9 has come true. Satan and his angels, known as demons, have deceived the WHOLE world – even many churches. If an entire church organization denies the existence of the demonic world, they are automatically deceived.

Have you ever heard or seen kitchen cabinets opening and closing with no one around – seemingly? The scriptures were written for US who are living at the end of the age! Why would the Bible reference Satan and his angels [demons] if they didn’t exist? Why would we be told to put on the whole armor of God to protect us FROM them if they are not real?

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles [tricks] of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against PRINCIPALITIES, AGAINST POWERS, AGAINST THE RULERS OF THE DARKNESS OF THIS WORLD, AGAINST WICKED SPIRITS IN HIGH PLACES [margin in King James Version]. Wherefore take unto you the WHOLE ARMOR of God, that you may be able to withstand in THE evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD:Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto will all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” (Ephesian6:11-18).

If there were no evil spirit world, why would we be instructed to battle wicked spirits in high places?

Revelation 1:1, 10 – “The Revelation [revealing] of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him to show unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it by His angel unto His servant John: V. 10 I was in the Spirit ON the Lord’s day, …” The preposition ON in verse ten could have been translated one of four prepositions: on, at, by, or in. V. 10 should have been translated – “I was in the Spirit IN the Lord’s day…” John was projected forward in time to the end of the age – the Lord’s Day. It is referred to approximately 30 times in the Old Testament as the horrible events leading up to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The entire Book of Revelation describes events that are occurring right now.

One of those events is a wicked spirit being cast permanently out of the heavens. “And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, WHICH DECEIVES THE WHOLE WORLD: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him” (Revelation 12:9).

Who is it that will persecute the church at the end of the age? “And when the dragon [the Devil, called Satan] saw that he was cast into the earth, he persecuted the woman [church and physical Israel/Judah] which brought forth the man child” (Revelation 12:13). Protection will be provided for the church from [out of contact with – Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary] “the face of the serpent.” This indicates clearly that Satan and his angels are still around.

The end time world dictatorship will rise, BUT where will it receive its power? “… and the dragon [the Devil, called Satan] gave him his POWER, and his SEAT, and GREAT AUTHORITY” (Revelation 13:2 last). This is the Beast government that will rule for the last 3 ½ years. It will receive GREAT AUTHORITY from Satan.

When the seventh trump sounds featuring the return of Jesus Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords, notice the first event to transpire. “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up [or chained him], and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations NO more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed [or released] a little season [or while]” (Revelation 20:1-3). It certainly appears that Satan is still active and will be until he is imprisoned. He is our enemy!!!
