Teach Me O Lord!

By David J. Smith

When the Protestant movement began with Luther, those involved were interested in objecting to the Pope as the head of the Catholic Church. They didn’t necessarily object to the false teaching that was the foundation of that church.

Jesus said His church would be a “little flock” (Luke 12:32). He also said it would NEVER die out. He would always raise someone up to lead that “little flock” into a right path. Jesus said He was “the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He would always have a church that He could TEACH, whether it is directly from the Bible or the ministry He set in the church (Ephesians 4:11-15). “All scripture is given by inspiration of GOD, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be [or become] perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The Protestant movement never did complete its reformation by repenting and turning to the Bible for correction. It never has sought out true doctrine. It clung to a form of Catholic doctrine through the years. It has not turned at God’s REPROOF. Righteousness eludes people that have not repented and sought Jesus to TEACH them His ways!!!

Have people, in professing Christianity, been taught “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, WHO WALK IN THE LAW of the Lord” (Psalm 119:1). How many professing Christian churches WALK IN THE LAW of the Lord. Isn’t their favorite saying: “The Law is done away, or nailed to the cross?” When Jesus said: “Think NOT that I am come to destroy [nail to the cross] the Law, or the prophets: I am NOT COME TO DESTROY, but to fulfil (fill it to the fullest spiritual intent). For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall BREAK one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall DO and TEACH them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:17-19).

Why haven’t people been taught that all Ten Commandments are still in effect today? Jesus was “nailed” to the cross to shed His blood for our BREAKING any of the commandments. The Law wasn’t nailed to the cross or we would have NO measurement for sin. “Sin Is the transgression of the Law …” (I John 3:4). Jesus died on the cross to reverse the death penalty. Through His death, He has forgiven our breaking of the Law that produces death. He has set us free from the death penalty. He didn’t eliminate a perfect Law that tells us what sin is!!! Jesus came to shed “the blood of the everlasting covenant” (Hebrews 13:20).

Jesus Christ personally called Saul on the road to Damascus. His name was changed to Paul. He wrote half the books of the New Testament. Paul was inspired to write to the Romans: “… the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and GOOD” (Romans 7:12). He then goes on to write: “For we know that the law IS SPIRITUAL: …” (v.14). Why can’t professing Christians receive reproof and change?

The only problem people have trouble with is the 4th Commandment! “REMEMBER (not forget) the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labor, and do all your work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord [Jesus Christ – I Corinthians 10:1-4] your God … For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and RESTED the seventh day: wherefore the Lord [Jesus Christ] blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it [made it holy]” (Exodus 20:8-11).

Jesus did not play mind games with the scribes, Pharisees, and doctors of the law, etc. He was confronted about His doctrine, which included the Sabbath day. “And he [Jesus] said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man [Greek: mankind], and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of man IS LORD also of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27-28).

Jesus is lord and master of the 7th day as recorded in the Ten Commandments. Why isn’t it kept by all professing Christians? The Catholic Church claims that by keeping Sunday instead of the Sabbath, it shows the Protestant world is just wayward Catholics. However, the church Jesus built was never a part of the Catholic heresy. It has always been taught by Jesus from His word and His ministers that He raises up to “feed His flock.” Jesus’ small flock was always persecuted by the massive church that accepted paganism’ doctrines instead of His. It is absolutely necessary to be taught of Christ. TEACH ME!!!
