Are You Above the Law?

By David J. Smith
July 6, 2013

In Genesis 1: 1 it says: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The God family created the vastness of the universe and stabilized it by definitive Laws, such as gravity, centrifugal force, electricity, magnetism, and a host of other Laws that keeps all the heavenly bodies operating properly. If you interfere with these God-ordained Laws, you could literally destroy the earth.

Around 1900, a man named Nikola Tesla was well on his way to patent over 900 discoveries, mostly dealing with magnetism and electricity. He received fourteen honorary doctorates from different universities around the world. He was a genius of the first magnitude in the fields of electricity and magnetism. He gave an interview to The World Today in 1912 and stated: “Within a few weeks, I could set the earth’s crust into such a state of vibrations that it would rise and fall hundreds of feet, throwing rivers out of their beds, wrecking buildings, and practically DESTROYING CIVILIZATION.”

The violation of any of God’s Laws produces consequences in a negative way.

In Genesis 1: 26-27 it says: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over ALL the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”

Mankind was created to look like God, only in a physical state, not yet composed of spirit. God created the Laws that exert force over everything before man was ever created. Therefore, it says in James 4: 12: “There is ONE lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy …” Look at the previous V. 11: “Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaks evil of his brother, and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law, and judges the law (or put yourself above the Law): but if you judge the law, you art not a doer of the law, but a judge.”

s it possible to feel that we are above the Law, and therefore are exempt from keeping, obeying it? Can we ignore our Creator’s Laws and not suffer the consequences? After all, James 4:12 did say the ONE LAWGIVER could save or destroy!

If we have claimed that we have repented of violating God’s Laws, were baptized for the remission of our violations, and received God’s Holy Spirit, then Hebrews 12: 22-29 is for us. “But you are come unto mount Sion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels. To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of ALL, and to the spirits of just men made perfect. And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better things than that of Abel. [v.25] See that you refuse NOT Him that speaks. For if they escaped not who refused Him that spoke on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we TURN AWAY from Him that speaks from heaven: Whose voice then shook the earth: but now He has promised saying, YET ONCE MORE I SHAKE NOT THE EARTH ONLY, BUT ALSO HEAVEN. And this word, Yet once more, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which CANNOT be shaken may remain. [v.28] Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God ACCEPTABLY with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.”

Let’s summarize:

  • 1) We have now approached God’s Heavenly throne and all the heavenly host, including Jesus our Savior.
  • 2) Ancient Israel refused to listen and obey God and died in the wilderness.
  • 3) We, who have received the Holy Spirit, dare not to listen to God’s word and be obedient or the Lake of Fire is assured for us.

When God called us, we agreed to come into a covenant relationship with Him. If He would forgive all of our past violations of His Law, we would from that instant forward OBEY His Laws from the heart. We would not do as the Jews have done in their Talmud – humanly reason around obedience, giving permission to disobey while justifying their actions.

Hebrews 13: 8: “Jesus Christ, the SAME yesterday, today, and for ever.” The death penalty still exists today for disobedience. Romans 6: 23 says: “For the wages [payment earned, according to the Greek] of sin is DEATH; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The writer of the Book of Hebrews stated in chapter 10: 23: “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith WITHOUT WAVERING; (for He is faithful that promised;).” We are to keep and obey God’s Laws – not justify disobedience or human reason around obedience. Didn’t we “count the cost” of obedience?

Luke 14: 26-30 tells us: “If any man come to Me, and hate [love less in comparison] not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whosoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sits not down first, and counts the cost, whether he has sufficient to finish it? [Remember the scripture: He that endures unto the end shall be saved?] [v.29] Lest haply, AFTER he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him. Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.” Disobedience or thinking we are above the Law will cut us short of the finish line every time!

Notice I Corinthians 9: 24-27: “Know you not that they which run in a race run all, but one receives the prize? So run, that you may obtain. And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate [in this case is obedient, not above the Law] in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air [shadow boxing]: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection [to God’s Law]: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a CASTAWAY.”

These are strong words. They are inspired by Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. Do we dare compromise our covenant relationship with God and border on self-annihilation in a consuming fire?

We made a covenant with God that we would give up all worldly possessions, jobs, money, friends, smoking marijuana or taking other mind altering drugs, etc., if it became necessary. Why am I mentioning these things? Because, if we are not careful, we can compromise obeying God and think we are just okay. We do not want any willful sin in our life without realizing it. Hebrews 10: 26-31: “For if we sin willfully AFTER that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins [we become indifferent], But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know Him that has said, VENGEANCE BELONGS UNTO ME, I WILL RECOMPENSE, says the Lord. And again, THE LORD SHALL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

God will not be mocked. He knows our mind whether it carries a double standard or not. He knows whether we are hiding a sin or sins and justifying them in our own mind. Jeremiah 17: 9-10: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” Galatians 6: 7-9: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh REAP corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit REAP life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing [obeying God’s Laws]: for in due season we shall REAP, IF WE FAINT NOT.

I once knew a man that was being deceived concerning a certain point. He said, “I prayed about it, so I know I’m right.” Later, he was pulled out of the fire and found he was not right. Another man said he “begged God not to let him pursue a certain course if it was not His will.” He followed that course and hopefully will be pulled out of the fire. God laid down in the Bible His will. We are to study to show ourselves approved to God. If He has many scriptures revealing His will on a certain matter, you should know it. Why would He stop you from sinning if that is what you have set your heart upon?

Another example: The Seventh Day Adventist has set up hospitals all over the nation. Their doctors go in to work on the Sabbath under the guise that they are doing good. They should know God’s will on this matter. They administer mind-altering drugs also!

Revelation 18 is God’s condemnation of Mystery Babylon the Great. Look at v.23: “And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in you; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in you: for your merchants [economic system] were the great men of the earth; for by your sorceries were all nations deceived.

The word sorceries comes from the Greek word #5331-5332 pharmakeia, the English word pharmacy, meaning “medication, by extension magic, witchcraft.”

Revelation 21: 8 discusses those that will not be in the kingdom of God. “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone; which is the second [and final] death.”

Sorcerers is #5332 in the Greek Strong’s Concordance. It also comes from pharmakeus, meaning “a druggist [“pharmacist”] or poisoner; a magician.”

When the new heavens and new earth is in place with God the Father’s throne on this earth, notice Revelation 22: 15: “For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.” The word sorcerer is the identical word and definition: “a druggist or poisoner; a magician.” Just watch the 5:30 PM world news on ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX and see what the commercials consist of – drugs. They even mention the side effects. They are trying to work “magic” inside the body. But their “magic” can leave you with strokes, heart failure, high blood pressure, and a host of other problems.

Would God’s will be to establish hospitals that cause you to violate His Law, so you can practice “witchcraft,” “magic,” or be “a poisoner?” Don’t be deceived by this world. Satan has deceived the whole world according to Revelation 12: 9.

Is anyone above God’s Law? Let’s go back in time and look at something so simple, yet can be abused, and determine God’s will in the matter. A long, long time ago God created the heavens and the earth. He created the earth and filled it with living creatures. Late on the sixth day He created a man, followed by a woman. Now the creation was complete. God does not grow tired and need to rest, but He did something very unusual as His next step in the completion process.

“And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from ALL His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: BECAUSE that in it He had rested from ALL His work which God created and made” (Genesis 2: 2-3).

God eventually called Abraham and his descendants to be His special people. After four hundred years of trials and testings, God delivered Israel out of Egyptian bondage as a type of delivering us out of bondage to sin and death.

God fed Israel with manna for forty years while they travelled through the wilderness seeking the promised land. God had instructed Israel through Moses, to gather enough manna on the sixth day for the seventh day also because there would be none to gather on His sanctified seventh day. Many of the people did not listen. THEY DIDN’T BELIEVE GOD MEANT WHAT HE SAID – there would be none, but they were to rest and NOT work.

This disobedience angered God [Jesus Christ – I Corinthians 10: 1-4]. He then spoke through Moses to the Israelites again, saying: “How long refuse you to keep My commandments and My laws?” (Exodus 16: 28). The Seventh Day Sabbath [rest] is a LAW of God, of which violation of it is a SIN!!! Jesus inspired in the newer writings: “WHOSOEVER commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin IS the transgression of the law” (I John 3: 4).

NO ONE is above God’s Law. Violation of it brings the death penalty. The ONLY way to have the death penalty removed is to repent – QUIT violating the Sabbath and start obeying it by resting FROM all your labor.

Jesus, as the God of the Old Testament, stood on the top of mount Sinai and thundered down the Ten Commandments with His own voice. It so terrified the Israelites that they told Moses: “… Speak you with us, and we will hear: BUT let not God speak to us, lest we die” (Exodus 20: 19). Moses had a different understanding as to WHY God was speaking to them. “And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that you SIN NOT” (Exodus 20: 20).

God had just told them His law, of which violation of any one was a sin! Notice very carefully. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labor, and do ALL your work: BUT the seventh day is the Sabbath OF THE LORD YOUR GOD: in it you shall NOT DO ANY WORK, … For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord [Jesus Christ] blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it”
(Exodus 20: 8-11).

There is only ONE exemption for working on the Sabbath Day – the minister who must explain God’s word and make it clear to the listener! NO ONE ELSE CAN WORK ON GOD’S HOLY TIME!!! No one is above the Law. You violate it, it brings death unless the violation is repented of with a sincere and genuine heart.

I have known people to use the phrase for working on the Sabbath: it was an ox in the ditch or I was doing “good.” Do these phrases justify sin? Absolutely not! Jesus gave an example of an oxen falling into a ditch that could be injured or die, so helping it out was not work.

Let’s take it one step further. A fireman is on the job in case a house catches on fire. He would help put it out. That’s doing “good.” What about an insurance salesman selling insurance on the Sabbath? Surely that is doing “good” in case the person’s house caught fire! What about a nurse being on duty all day long – even without pay? What about a doctor who goes into the hospital and spends 8-12 hours taking care of sick patients? Isn’t that doing “good?” What about an auto mechanic? He is doing “good” by repairing someone’s car. Sure, it is doing “good,” but it also violates God’s Law that says NOT TO DO ANY WORK.

There is a vast difference in helping a dog that was hit by a car or change a flat tire for a woman and her two children than predetermining that you work the entire Sabbath Day with no opportunity to be holy. If a person was at work, how could they attend a “commanded assembly?” How could they respond to a “summons” to appear before their God in worship and learning of Him if they are at work all day? It is simple – they couldn’t!!! Sin = the violation of the Law – God’s Law!
(I John 3:4)

Jesus said: “if you love me, keep My commandments.” Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for OUR LEARNING, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15: 4).

Ancient Israel was a type of the church. They were seeking to enter the “promised land.” We are seeking to enter into the kingdom of God. Israel wandered for forty years and never found the promised land – WHY? “So we see that they could not enter in BECAUSE of unbelief.” (Hebrews 3: 19).

The Greek word “unbelief” is #570-571 in the Strong’s Concordance. It means: faithlessness; disbelief; UNFAITHFULNESS; DISOBEDIENCE; disbelieving; without faith as a heathen; UNTRUSTWORTHY.

God is looking for people that He can trust to be obedient to His Law. Christ is making us kings and priests unto our God, but that requires OBEDIENCE. How can God TRUST anyone to administer His Law if they compromise and disobey? Ancient Israel LOST out on entering the “promised” land! Will any of us “miss out” on entering the kingdom of God because of disobedience? The choice is YOURS!!!
