A Right Spirit!

By David J. Smith
September 7, 2013

Many seek a right heart before God. King David was one such person. He came to recognize his sins and cried out to God like this: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a RIGHT spirit within me” (Psalms 51:10). King David sought the ‘high road’ seeking God, not his own personal way. However, there is a different way!

Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Proverbs 16:18-19).

There is a vast difference between a RIGHT spirit and a HAUGHTY spirit!!! In the prophecy of the coming of Jesus, it said of Him: “And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord;” (Isaiah 11:2). God, the Father, gave Jesus a RIGHT spirit to perform His task of salvation.

There is something God will do for those He has called. “For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones” (Isaiah 57:15).

Notice what a right spirit does for a person! “There is therefore now NO condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death(Romans 8:1-2). As a result, v.16 tells us: “The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we ARE the children of God:” v.26 “Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.” The Spirit is very diversified in helping us through this life.

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty(2 Corinthians 3:17). When you receive the forgiveness of sins, you have LIBERTY from the death penalty.

When you become a Christian, God expects you and I to develop the fruit of the Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit IS love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we walk live in the Spirit, let us also WALK in the Spirit(Galatians 5:22-25). If these traits are developed within us, we will maintain a right and contrite spirit!!!

If we do not maintain this right and contrite spirit, something spiritually devastating could happen to us. “And GRIEVE NOT the holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30). The holy Spirit seals us until we receive our new body. We should not grieve it because it grieves God. He is the giver of life by His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus inspired for US: “Quench not the Spirit” (I Thessalonians 5:19).

The writer of the Book of Hebrews, while talking about the Sabbath tells us how powerful God’s word is: “For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, … and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

In reference to the conduct of women, Peter wrote: “But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a MEEK and QUIET SPIRIT, which is in the sight of God of GREAT PRICE (I Peter 3:4).

God is desirous of us to develop a right spirit!!! He desires us, as His sons, to have a similar heart as Jesus and He has. How has He given us understanding? “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto OUR glory: … But God has revealed them unto us BY HIS SPIRIT: for the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. … comparing spiritual things with spiritual. … FOR WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE MAY INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ(1 Corinthians 2:16).
