When Will We Understand?

By David J. Smith

When we look around the world and see war escalating, murder, rape, genocide, theft, drug addiction, drunkenness, incest, fornication, adultery, homosexuality and lesbianism, anti-Christian activities to eradicate the name of Jesus from the public conscience, we can only think what a terrible world.

Louis Armstrong once recorded a song with the phrase in it: “oh, what a wonderful world.” We could deceive ourselves into believing this if all we do is lust for money and are greedy for the things it buys. We could busy ourselves and not smell the roses.

Long ago, something happened that caused mankind to start on a journey of lust and greed. We started on a road of non-caring about the consequences of our actions. Husbands and wives are miserable because of pure selfishness. Children are no longer taught manners, or right from wrong.

Mankind has been on a train headed for misery and destruction because of sin, and has become indifferent about anything except what satisfies his/her own fleshly appetites of lust and greed.

There is a manual that furnishes the solution to women being abused, husbands feeling henpecked, children being neglected, and lust and greed being eliminated. That manual is called the Bible. It furnishes solutions to all of our problems by changing the HEARTS of those who are willing.

That Book says: “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). How can a wife or husband that is abandoned by his/her mate solve the problem unless both are willing to eliminate selfishness, lust and greed? How can a true Christian that is putting off the “old man” and putting on the “new man” create such problems in a marriage that separation and divorce become inevitable?

If someone is married to an unbeliever and the unbeliever leaves, the Bible says you are not bound to that person; rather, you are free to marry a true believer
(I Corinthians 7: 12-16). But where do true believers get the idea that they can live by fleshly lust and greed, and treat his/her mate like the world would?

Whatever happened to the “fruit of the Spirit” being developed in our lives? Whatever happened to God’s divine nature being built into us? If the “fruit of the Spirit” and God’s “divine nature” is being developed within us by the power of the Holy Spirit, WHY DON’T WE TREAT OUR MATES WITH LOVE? WHY ISN’T OUR MATE OUR VERY BEST FRIEND, AND IT WOULD DEVASTATE US IF WE FOUND OUT WE HURT HIS/HER FEELINGS IN ANY WAY?

Why aren’t we GIVING our thoughts and desires in conversation with our mates? Why can’t a mate listen to the other when they need encouragement, uplifting and your personal attention? WHY ARE WE SO SELFISH AND PROUD THAT WE CAN’T LOVE? Why do we only love ourselves and forget the most precious person in our life – our mate?

Satan hates families because God is a family, and he will not be in it! YOU CAN HOWEVER! It is so sad when people lose sight of the “big picture” of what God has called us to perform and turn to lust, greed, selfishness, and throw away God’s plan for us. Why can’t people just carry on a logical conversation and solve petty problems between themselves? Pride! That’s why!!

Because God does not swat us like flies the moment we rip apart a relationship through lust, greed, and selfishness, does not mean His eyes are closed. The Bible says His eyes run to and fro throughout the whole earth. His angels are watching every move we make. They report every decision we make – whether good or bad. What you or I do affects others! When a husband deserts a family or a wife runs off with the plumber, it affects the whole family – husband, wife and children.

Ancient Israel committed spiritual adultery against her husband, the Lord God Almighty. He had to put her away for her sins. They were sifted through the nations and lost their identification as Israelites. However, the attending sorrows FOR their sins went with them. Jesus inspired that “whatsoever you sow you shall reap.” If we sow sin against our spouses and children, we will reap the heartache and sorrow that comes along. IT’S A LAW!!!

If drinking is a threat to your happy home, QUIT DRINKING TODAY! If smoking some type of illegal drug threatens your marriage, GIVE IT UP NOW! If you have broken the spirit of your spouse through iron clad control tactics, REPENT AND HUMBLE YOURSELF BEFORE YOUR SPOUSE AND ASK FORGIVENESS! Treat your spouse as the most important person on earth, outside of God.

Do we, of all people, not believe that we are living in the end times? Do we think we can return to the vomit of sin by mistreating our spouse and children? Do we think God took a vacation and will never know that we have adopted selective hearing and obeying?

Whatever happened to John 13:34-35 – that all men would know we are His disciples because we love one another? Whatever happened to loving people we can see before we can love God that we have never seen? Whatever happened to love your neighbor [spouse] AS YOURSELF? I JUST WONDER!

When will we really understand it? God wants a change of HEART – attitude!!! I hope very soon!!!
