Extinction Level Events Possible Jesus gave us as a sign-post that we are entering into an era of unprecedented horror in Mark 13:19-20: "For in those days shall be AFFLICTION, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. And EXCEPT that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved [alive - Moffatt Translation]; BUT FOR THE ELECT'S SAKE, WHOM HE HAS CHOSEN, he has shortened the days." In summary: A) We will enter into a time period of the most horrible series of events the world has ever experienced. This has become possible with the advent of nuclear weapons - enough to erase life off 50 to 100 earth's. This has also become possible with genetically engineered germs and viruses called "chemical-biological" weapons of mass destruction. But that's not all. B) We know for a fact that the earth had some type of destruction before it was renewed and man placed on the planet as described in Genesis 1 and 2. We know the earth was split - meaning land masses separated - in the days of Peleg according to Genesis 10:25. Something caused it naturally or God did it supernaturally.
When Jerusalem falls to other nation's armies - probably the United Nations, notice what else is transpiring that will be a sign-post that we are in the LAST DAYS. Luke 21:25-26: "And there shall be SIGNS in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity [Greek - "to have no way out]; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and looking after those things WHICH ARE COMING ON THE EARTH: for the POWERS of heaven shall be shaken."
Something people will see with their own eyes will CAUSE heart attacks and panic. It says here that it will be signs FROM the heavens. Something will CAUSE gravitational pull on the seas to create huge waves slashing into the metropolitan cities on the coastlines and sinking ships, destroying harbors. It will be visible. People will think it is to be an extinction level event as was with the dinosaurs. THEY WILL BE HELPLESS TO PREVENT IT.
All reputable astronomers and scientists admit that something is OUT THERE just beyond Neptune, Jupiter and Pluto that is causing "perturbation" - or irregularities of their orbits. It's now been admitted they have found another planet, but where will its orbit be? Could its orbit interfere with earth's orbit? Isaiah concludes that something will CAUSE planet earth problems! He does not say what, but
we are told to watch in Matthew 24:42.Isa. 24:1-6: "Behold, the Lord makes [allows] the earth [to become] empty, and makes it waste, and turns it upside down, and scatters abroad the inhabitants thereof. [verse 2 says every human will be affected equally] The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the Lord has spoken this word. The earth mourns and fades away, the world languishes and fades away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. The earth also is defiled [polluted] under the inhabitants thereof; BECAUSE they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant [see Genesis 17:1-7 and Hebrews 13:20-21]. Therefore has the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are BURNED [How? - WHY?], and few men left."
Let's summarize: A) God will allow some giant tragedy to occur because He has the power to stop it OR allow it. Whatever this effect is will alter the land masses. Giant, global earthquakes could erupt because of the gravitational pull of this object that effects earth. Cracks, possibly miles wide, could occur which would allow massive flooding, diversion of rivers, shifting of mountain ranges, sinking of some land areas and the rise of others. Volcanic activity could cause atmospheric changes for months or years - shorten or eliminate growing seasons, cover cities and villages with magma. Obviously, sin is why God will allow this to happen.
V. 18-20: "…for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved [WHY?], the earth is moved exceedingly. THE EARTH SHALL REEL TO AND FRO LIKE A DRUNKARD, AND SHALL BE REMOVED LIKE A COTTAGE; and the transgression shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again." B) It states clearly that all the laws that holds earth in its proper orbit will be affected to allow it to wobble out of its orbit. Something with a strong gravitational pull will of necessity interfere with earth's normal rotational patterns. It's called in the scientific community "perturbation." Once again, the time setting is when God will punish the fallen angels and the kings of the earth - V.21-23 - just before Christ will reign.
Rev. 20:1-4 confirms this statement. "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which IS the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years. And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations NO more, TILL the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years."
What this object is that creates "perturbation" - irregularities - of the earth's orbit is yet to be determined factually beyond a shadow of a doubt, but we are definitely given the results in Rev. 8:7-12: "The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burned up, and all green grass was burned up. And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea [an asteroid]: and the third part of the sea became blood; and the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, DIED; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp [another asteroid burning from friction as it enters earth's atmosphere], and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men DIED of the waters, because they were made bitter. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day showed not for a third part of it, and the night likewise [from smoke, soot. and ashes]."
Evidence of Past Extinction Level Events
Cuvier (1769-1832), the founder of vertebrate paleontology, or the science of petrified skeletons of animals possessing vertebrae, from fish to man, was much impressed by the picture presented by the sequence of the layers of earth.
"When the traveller passes over these fertile plains where gently flowing streams nourish in their course an abundant vegetation, and where the soil, inhabited by a numerous population, adorned with flourishing villages, opulent cities, and superb monuments, is never disturbed, except by the ravages of war, or by the oppression of the powerful, he is not led to suspect Nature also has her intestine wars,
and that the surface of the globe has been broken up by revolutions and CATASTROPHES. But his ideas CHANGE as soon as he digs into that soil which now presents so peaceful an aspect" (G. Cuvier, Essay on the Theory of the Earth [5th edition, 1827] ).Cuvier thought that GREAT CATASTROPHES had taken place on this earth, repeatedly changing sea beds into continents and continents into sea beds. He held that genera [capability to be produced] and species were unchangeable since Creation; but, observing different animal remains in... (continued...)
