In modern society, the greed of the grocery industry has introduced what is called preservatives. Preservatives are chemicals added to food to preserve its shelf life. The food industry does not want their product to spoil before they have opportunity to sell it. However, these chemical agents are foreign to the human body, and in the long term they begin to cause cancer. This is a false system for profits only. It is not in the best interest of the people.
God the Father and Jesus Christ also have preserving agents. They “call” individuals to be the salt of the earth. Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary says concerning salt: to preserve with salt; to season with salt . “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matthew 5: 13). Saints of God are to be developing the righteous character of Jesus Christ, so we become preserving agents throughout a sin-laden world. When you sprinkle salt on vegetables or meat, it is scattered throughout the food – not concentrated in one spot. If you take a bite of food that is “too” salty, we want to spit it out of our mouth. God has scattered His people among the ungodly to preserve the earth from total destruction. However, if a Christian does not develop the character of Christ, how will the world be seasoned or preserved? If we have let down and become worldly again, how can Jesus use us to preserve the earth? Jesus gave us the reason He will preserve the earth, in spite of the multitude
of sins, in Matthew 24: 21- 22: “For then shall be GREAT TRIBULATION, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved [alive]: but for the ELECT’S SAKE those days shall be shortened.” Jesus Christ will intervene in human affairs just as we are about to be annihilated ourselves. He stated He would stop world suicide BECAUSE of His elect. It sure seems to me that we have a reason to develop character – because we will be the salt that preserves mankind alive!!! Ask yourself: Am I helping to preserve the love of God in the world today? Am I preserving kindness by the actions I take toward others? When I am around others, do I bring the joy of God into their lives? When I visit people in their homes or at church, do I give off a genuine sense of peace to all? Am I gentle in my approach to my friends, husband, wife, children or my relatives? Am I a patient person under all conditions? All of these are part of preserving the earth – being the salt of the earth. There are multitudes of character traits that could be asked about that should be in each of our lives, but these few provide us an example.
