Dear Newswatch Magazine Listeners/Readers:

T he Bible mentions the kings of the east in its Book of Revelation. Directions are to be determined from Jerusalem. Directly east of Jerusalem is the country of China - the most populated nation on earth. China is on the march. Will they turn out to be friends or foes of the United States?
After 500 years of humiliation, a surging China is about to reclaim its historical position as one of the world's great powers. But the question must be re-asked: Will the reborn China be a friend to the West - or a daunting foe?
Nothing like this has ever happened before. A nation with over one-billion people coming off 500 years of bad times in which it says it was humiliated by "barbarians," sunk into poverty and anarchy has emerged a few decades later with an economic growth rate that the word "miraculous" seems too modest.
Its culture shows a new vitality. Its armed forces modernized. And the remainder of the world watches, impressed and nervous at the same time, wondering if the new giant still seethes with resentment about that half millennium in which it was left behind.
That, in essence, is where China is now. Until about 1500, China led the world in the sophistication of its culture, economy and society. Since then the Europeans - more recently, the American branch of that family - have led the world. But the United States is in gradual, if inevitable, decline from the position it had in 1945, when it accounted for fully half of the world's economic output. China is in far-from-gradual advance. Short of disaster, it will be the world's largest economy within a few decades. China as a friend would be a comforting thought.
But it's not how China looks right now. It fires missiles into the sea, angered by Taiwan's display of democracy. A friendly China? Not the one that thumbs its nose at America's pretensions to be an Asian power, even as American warships steam through the Pacific. A China that was merely prickly, one could live with. But a China that sees itself as a natural enemy of the United States - that's another matter!
China is COMMUNIST! That's the problem in answering the question - friend or foe? They have stood by the Marxist teachings strongly. They believe Karl Marx when he said that they were at war with Capitalism until the death.
Men in our own State Department helped deliver China to Communism and cut off supplies to our staunch ally Chiang Kai-shek. The Communist could NOT have taken Russia, China, Eastern Europe, Cuba, South Africa, etc., without the ultra-rich in America, Britain and Europe financing those overthrows. Even the Shaw of Iran and Marcos were undermined by our State Department.
President Bill Clinton continued to help China come of age as a world threat by transferring high technology to them. In earlier times in America, it would have been called treason. But today, it's just doing business in the global village.
China's military has expanded in such an alarming way to leave the informed baffled at how it has happened. Their army, air force and navy stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the borders of Bangladesh, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and India. Rather than overthrow India as it did Tibet, China and Russia have entered into an agreement with India. This means all of Asia, with few exceptions, is in the Communist orbit.
For all practical purposes, Africa is also in the Communist orbit. One Communist leader stated that when Communism had the Asian and African continents under their control, they could march on the United States and win by shear numbers.
In 1989 China showed clearly that it would not deviate from Communism with the massacre in Tiananmen Square. They regained control of Hong Kong and the surrounding area from Britain in 1997. Then China took Macau peninsula from Portugal in 1999.
Because the United States leadership for years have decided that trading with Communist countries will bring them around to our point of view, we are on the verge of destroying our entire manufacturing base. Communist Chinese slave labor makes products much cheaper than American union workers can, thus throwing millions out of our industries and into a service oriented society. You can only have so many insurance and real estate salesmen until you saturate the work place. Everything you wear practically is "made in China." The garment manufacturing in America is a gone industry - so is steel production.
Brought down to the lowest denominator, it is nothing but Marxist redistribution of the wealth away from "have" countries to "have-nots".
Sincerely,
