Former Soviets Built the War Machine in Nicaragua
On May 20, 1985, Sandinista dictator Daniel Ortega announced that the Soviet Union had agreed to supply 80 to 90 percent of Nicaragua's oil needs for the year and that other Soviet-bloc nations he visited in April had promised to provide raw materials, consumer goods, and food.
The Phyllis Schlafly Report of August 1985 reported information provided by witnesses testifying before a group of military and intelligence experts collaborating under the name "National Committee to Restore Internal Security." The hearing was held at a Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.
The witnesses told how Nicaragua has become a base for an extraordinary and dramatic buildup of military weapons and equipment - more extensive than was the buildup rate in Cuba.
This extraordinary military buildup was accomplished under the guidance of about 3,000 Cuban military advisers extending down even to the infantry level, one for every 60 soldiers. In 1986 there were about 9,000 Cubans in Nicaragua.
In 1983 the Soviet bloc delivered over $100 million in military hardware to Nicaragua. But it wasn't just Russians and Cubans who managed the Sandinista's military policy; foreign advisors also included Communist Vietnam, North Koreans, Bulgarians, East Germans, and PLOs.
According to a Pentagon report issued in April 1985, Soviet military aid to the Communist Sandinistas totaled 18,200 tons of weapons in 1984.
John Rees, writing in the April 24, 1985 issue of the Review of the News revealed: "When the 5,000 members of the FSLN took control of Nicaragua in July 1979, they 'inherited' from the National Guard three tanks, 25 armored cars, three artillery pieces, and seven helicopters. Now, thanks to Soviet largesse, the Sandinista People's Army has more than 340 tanks, including 110 Soviet-made T-55s and 30 new PT-76 light amphibious tanks. The two anti-aircraft guns of Somoza's days have been expanded to 200; and now the Sandinista are receiving both Soviet Mi-8 troop-transport helicopters and the latest Mi-24/HIND D attack helicopters of the sort the Soviets are using in their genocidal war in Afghanistan."
Rees also pointed out that a military airport with a 12,000-foot runway is being built at Punta Hueta, north of Managua, to accomodate any aircraft in the modern Soviet inventory. More than 80 Nicaraguan pilots were trained in Bulgaria to fly MiG-21 and MiG-23 interceptors. Thirty of those pilots went to Cuba to hone their skills.
As of the first of 1986, the Sandinistas had a 62,000-man active duty force, and 57,000 men in the reserves and militia - a large number for such a small country. The FSLN leadership announced that it intends to expand its military to 200,000 men - almost one-tenth of the entire population of Nicaragua.
The Washington Times of November 4, 1985, reported that Soviet and Bulgarian freighters at the Cuban port of Mariel have been transferring large amounts of heavy war materiel to Nicaraguan coastal freighters for delivery to the Sandinista government. This operation was confirmed by a U.S. SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane that flew over Cuba on October 31, 1985.
Communists Advancing On The U.S. From Central America!
The situation in Central and South America is desperate, but you never hear anything about it on the national TV networks. The Communists took over the government of Nicaragua in 1979 and began building it up as a base to ultimately ATTACK the United States. El Salvador could fall, with the front moving upon Guatemala. Then only ONE country would separate Guatemala and the United States - MEXICO. Whether Americans know it or not, the Mexican government before the new President Fox have presented themselves as friends of Castro of Cuba. Will Fox be any different? He is pushing the Communist goal of free trade with President George W. Bush.
In March 1985, Senator Orrin Hatch stated: "Imagine what it will be like when EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY at America's southern border, including Mexico, has Soviet airfields and Soviet missiles and Soviet nuclear-missile submarine bases. Finally, it would be America's turn to be the Communists' next target."
Sincerely,
