Dear Newswatch Magazine Listeners/Readers:
N ewswatch Magazine was founded on August 23, 1980 in the suburbs of St.Louis, Missouri. After 14 years of intense study of the Bible, Jesus Christ called me into His ministry. No man or human organization called me or asked me to preach. While studying, suddenly a Bible appeared before my eyes. I could see whatever I was reading or viewing, but that Bible was still there. I could see right through it.
After nearly 60 days of seeing this vision, a friend went on a business trip with me. He said I really looked tired. For the first time, I had the courage to mention to someone else what had been happening to me. We sat in a motel room in Joplin, Missouri every night from Sunday to Thursday studying HOW God's Spirit would come upon men of old. It would stir them up to perform something that God had decided upon in advance that needed to be done - such as Gideon.
Little did I know what Jesus and God the Father had in mind for me to perform. He first allowed me to crawl. I had written four articles and had them published in other church publications. I had designed the front cover of Newswatch Magazine already. When my friend and I got back from my advertising business trip, I took the four articles straight to a printer that I had done business with for years and explained what I wanted - a magazine. He gave me a bid on the cost of printing and typesetting of the magazine.
Since I was alone, I had NO supporters to help finance the new project. However, it didn't matter. I KNEW the Living God and His Son had touched my life. Either He raised me up by the POWER of His Holy Spirit or I would be running without God's blessing. One long time friend and I held our first church service on the first Sabbath of August 1980. The next week, counting myself, there were eight of us. We met at the Overland, Missouri YMCA. Eventually, around 25 people began to attend. Half were affiliated with another church but came to hear a live sermon.
After three months, someone finally gave me the first donation to help finance Newswatch Magazine and pay the rent on the room at the YMCA. That elderly lady, Mary Wilkerson, died in 1988. I spent every Thursday night for years at her home teaching her the Bible. She encouraged me at ALL times - NEVER ONCE saying a negative word that would discourage me.
By word of mouth, Newswatch spread to 13 states in three months. After six months, it was being read in 36 states and 20 foreign countries - all by word of mouth.
The first Tuesday of 1983 we started a 15 minute radio program on WGNU, the smallest wattage of any station in the St.Louis metroplex. It aired on Tuesday and Thursday.
The church grew slowly. Some wonderful people and others with head knowledge but NO fruit of repentance. We started on KAAY out of Little Rock, Arkansas and have been on that station every since 1983.
Meanwhile, I was invited to speak 3 times at a Feast of Tabernacles - Hebrew word for convocation meaning "to assembly, convene, hence a convention" - at Glorietta, New Mexico. Four ministers from four different organizations "laid hands" on me to ordain me into the job I had ALREADY been performing since August of 1980. Calvin Burrell prayed that God would set me aside for the ministry of prophecy. It has been so ever since.
As I drove to church services the first Sabbath of August of 1987, I had NO sermon. I waited upon God, but NOTHING came. About half-way there, suddenly Hebrews 11 thundered into my mind. I stood up with no notes or preparation. I KNEW THAT SERMON WAS FOR ME!!! I entitled that message "Faith In Spite of Man's Humanity!" The sermon was for ME - no one else. I told everyone they could sleep or ease-drop on the sermon because it was for me only. I KNEW from that day forward that God wanted me to GIVE UP my advertising business and totally rely upon Him for support of the ministry.
I gave my business to someone who had worked with me for years. Now I understood that it is ORDAINED that I should LIVE OF THE GOSPEL (1 Corinthians 9:9-14). God always PROVES us to know whether we TRUST Him or our own human efforts. Immediately after I gave away my livelihood, Jim and Tammy Baker were caught in their sins. Donations from radio plummeted. Then Jimmy Swaggert was caught with a prostitute. Donations to ministries nationwide went down by 60%.
I ate peanut butter sandwiches for several years so the ministry could stay on the air. God was proving me to determine whether I would be faithful NO MATTER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES LOOKED LIKE AROUND ME!!! Now the ingathering!!! God called me to move to a Western State and lead an "ingathering of saint" on May 10, 1993. Others heard it mentioned on radio by others who had dreams of this and mentioned it on May 1, 1993.
MAY 18, 2001 celebrates our arrival and others have joined us to help spread the message. Thank you Jesus and Father.
